Summer always feels short and sweet, and although we’re sad to be leaving warm evenings and barbeques behind, there’s something special about moving into autumn and winter. Now, we can say hello to copper leaves, crisp mornings and of course, the festive season! As the weather starts to chill, we can also start thinking of winter interior design ideas to keep our homes warm.
Preparing your home for winter doesn’t always mean renovating - there are many simple ways to invite warmth into your property ahead of the colder months. To help you get started, we’ve shared some of our favourite ideas!
Decorate with wooden accessories
One of the simplest ways to bring warm tones in your home ahead of winter is to decorate with wooden accessories and furnishings. Wooden accessories and furnishings bring a certain depth and feeling of warmth that’s difficult to replicate with faux-wooden furniture. With lots of different yellows, brown and gold tones, wooden furnishings - including cabinets, coffee tables and wooden-backed armchairs - can lift and brighten the colour of a room quickly and easily! This is a property that’s unique to natural materials.
Wood is also naturally insulative. This means that it helps to keep homes warm by retaining heat during the day and releasing it slowly when it gets colder - something everyone wants when the sun goes down on a cool winter’s night!
Use mirrors and chandeliers to reflect natural light
As the days get shorter, it becomes more and more important to make the most of natural light when we can. Natural light can lift and brighten a room in ways that are difficult to replicate with artificial bulbs - and it’s a mood booster, too. For this reason, we’d recommend finding ways to invite natural light into your home as much as possible throughout the winter months. There are many great ways to do this, but one of the quickest, simplest and most budget-friendly ways is to furnish your home with reflective accessories, including mirrors and chandeliers.
Not only do mirrors and chandeliers bring a touch of luxury into a property, but they are also highly reflective. Hanging a mirror up in a room can make it look brighter and more spacious, simply because light bounces off the glass and travels further.
This effect is even more dazzling when you decorate with a chandelier. As soon as light hits a chandelier, it splays out across the room with lots of beautiful patterns and shapes. Even on the darkest, gloomiest winter days, this effect will leave your home looking and feeling much warmer!
Although wooden and tiled flooring options look beautiful, they can feel much colder than carpeted floors during the winter. When you wake up in the morning, the last thing you want to do is step out of bed onto an icy-cold floor! That’s why we recommend layering up with fluffy rugs. Putting rugs down is one of the simplest and more cost-effective ways to warm up your home by adding an extra insulative layer to the floor - and they can also look very stylish!
One of the greatest things about decorating with rugs is that you can put them away in the summer if you want to. They are easy to store and they don’t take up much room, meaning you can simply get them out and put them away again throughout the year.
Hang up thick curtains and drapes
There’s nothing better than closing the curtains in the evening and settling into your living room, especially when it’s cold outside. Pulling the curtains closed can make it feel like you’re leaving the day behind, and when your living room is warm and cosy, shutting the world away can feel even more welcome. Not only this, but thick curtains can warm up your house! They’re a winter interior design must-have that can truly make a difference to the temperature and ambience of your home.
There are lots of different curtain styles to choose from, but we’d recommend thick velvet or corduroy drapes for the winter period. Thicker curtains will prevent heat from escaping your home much more easily than thinner, lighter styles, keeping your living areas a comfortable temperature all year round.
Swapping your curtains is also very budget-friendly. You can find brand new and second-hand curtains to suit every budget, so you won’t need to spend much when tweaking the interior of your home.
Position lamps and fairy lights around the house
Yellow light can make your home feel warmer instantly, so why not illuminate every corner with beautiful lamps and fairy lights? Decorating with floor lamps, table lamps, lanterns and reams of lights can transform your living areas quickly and easily, and doing so can even make your home feel bigger! After a long day of work, you’ll love letting yourself into the house and switching on the lights to cast a golden glow across the living room.
Of course, you don’t want your energy bills to surge because of your interior design choices! However, simply switching to lamps instead of using the main light fixture all the time allows you to enhance the ambience of your home while making it feel warmer.
If you’re just looking for ways to warm up your home in winter, then a permanent change such as painting the walls of your home may feel a little drastic. However, swapping cool tones for earthy shades can lift your interior design all year round and make your home feel cosier and more inviting. While you may not want to paint every room in your house bright yellow, finding ways to incorporate beige, brown and yellow tones into your paintwork can be very effective.
For instance, you may want to paint one feature wall in the colour of your choice. Or, you could even paint smaller patches, such as the frames of your windows or wooden panelling. The choice is yours!
Decorate with brass and copper tones
We’ve already discussed the benefits of decorating with wooden accessories, but brass and copper items can also help to warm up a home. There are also many subtle ways to incorporate brass and copper accessories into your interior design this winter, from furnishing your coffee tables with copper candle holders to swapping ceramic plant pots for brass-style planters.
Copper and brass are also tones that work well in every room in the house. Accessories in these colours often look great in living rooms, bathrooms and kitchens when paired with other earthy tones, such as forest green or deep ocean blue, making this a very versatile way to warm up your home.
Layer your sofas with blankets and cushions
During the cold winter months, there really is nothing better than curling up on the sofa with a blanket. With a roaring fire and a mug of hot chocolate, it can be difficult to remember why so many of us dread the winter months! Layering your sofa with lots of thick blankets and plush cushions can also make your home feel cosier and more comfortable, and it’s another cheap and easy way to tweak your interior design ready for winter.
Decorating with extra throws, blankets and cushions is also a great way to incorporate new tones and shades into your living room. If you’d like to introduce yellow, gold, orange or any other sunshine shades into your home without picking up a paintbrush, then consider buying new pillowcases or sofa throws. This is a simple alternative to long-lasting design changes.
