Roman blinds are one of the most iconic styles of blind available on the market today. Although they can still be found in homes up and down the country, they’re also one of the oldest types of window dressing too! As the name suggests, Roman blinds are from… Rome. Here, we provide a bit more information on their interesting history.
When it comes to Roman blinds, the adage ‘necessity is the mother of invention’ is certainly true. At the height of the Roman Empire, roads, buildings and gargantuan structures like the Colosseum were under construction constantly. This building work created a notorious amount of dust which would pour into the homes of people in the city. Trying to keep away from the midday sun and away from this dust, Roman blinds came into being.
During the very early incarnations of Roman blinds, homeowners would use damp cuttings of cloth or animal skins as drapes over their windows. Whist protecting their home from dust, the damp cloth also helped to reduce the stifling temperature of the sun during the day.
This method of protecting homes became more popular as time went on and led to the use of more extravagant materials for more wealthy citizens. Moving from damp cloth and animal skin, homeowners began to use more luxurious fabrics like wool and linen. Following on from this adaptation, string pulls and wooden slats were added to allow easy raising and lowering of the blinds. The simple design and easy operation of Roman blinds have remained largely unchanged to this day.
