As the mornings begin to get darker, the evenings longer and the temperature colder, it’s time to start thinking about preparing your home for winter. In the right setting, winter doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom: think cosy evenings by the fireplace, hot chocolates, mulled wine, long winter walks… The most important thing is that your home is warm for when the cold weather sets in.

Now is the perfect time to think about replacing your curtains. You may not realise, but the curtains you choose can have a huge impact on the warmth of your home and how much heat you can trap in a room. Plus, a new pair of curtains can completely transform the look of your space too!

With winter just around the corner, it’s important to work out whether it’s time to get some new curtains. Some indications are more obvious than others, so it’s important to keep an eye out for all the signs.

Read on for the seven signs you need new curtains this winter.

They don’t keep out cold air

When the weather is cold outside, you want to do all you can to keep your home warm and cosy inside. Curtains are an effective barrier between a cold window and a warm room, so it’s important they’re well insulated for the winter months. A thick pair of thermal curtains can be used to trap warm air in your home and keep out cold air.

If your curtains are so worn they’ve become faded and thin, they’re likely not doing a very good job at shutting out cold air. Investing in a new pair of curtains before the temperatures drop outside can help you save money on your energy bills and keep your home cosy.

They’re old and worn

If you can’t remember the last time you bought new curtains, it’s probably time to invest in a new pair. One of the most obvious signs your curtains need replacing is their age; if they look worn and they’re too old to be repaired, it’s time to spruce up your home with a brand new pair.

Over the years, your curtains will become aged and worn. Constant exposure to the sun causes fabrics to fade and degrade over time, whereas general wear and tear can lead to frayed edges and noticeable holes. If your curtains are old or damaged, it’s time to bite the bullet and invest in some new ones this winter.

They’re outdated

Over the years, styles and trends come and go. However, if your current curtains look like they belong in a sitting room from the 70s, it’s probably time to give them an update - and what better time than now? With Christmas on its way (we’re sorry to say the C word so early!), it’s important to start thinking about getting your home ready for the festive season and a new pair of curtains is certainly one way to brighten up the space.

Curtains come in a variety of patterns, colours and styles, but these can quickly become outdated. Even if you’re not someone who keeps up with the latest trends or has an interest in interior design, there comes a time when everyone should throw an old pair of outdated curtains out.

They no longer fit their purpose

Over the years, the way you use your home has likely changed. Different rooms may have had different purposes when you first moved in; for example, the room your children now play in may have originally been a home study or you may have recently transformed a room into a guest bedroom. If your needs have changed over the years and your curtains no longer fit their purpose, it’s certainly time for a replacement.

In addition to adding to your home’s aesthetic appeal, curtains provide many other purposes too, such as privacy and comfort. If your curtains no longer offer you these, it’s best to invest in a new pair.

You want to give your home a makeover

Are you looking to give your home a makeover before the festive season sets in? Now is the perfect time! Whether you want to give the interior of your property an entirely new look or you’re simply looking to freshen up a few items, updating your curtains is a tried and tested way to change the look of a room.

The right pair of curtains are the perfect finishing touch to any home; they pull everything together and complete the overall look of a space. Investing in a new pair of curtains will help achieve a new interior perspective and completely transform the space you’re working with.

If the room is neutral, why not add a splash of colour with a pair of curtains? Matching the curtains with other accents in the room, such as a rug or cushions, is an easy and effective way to draw together a room.

You want to try something new

Perhaps you simply feel ready to try something new. If you want to change the look of a room without redoing the entire space, a new pair of curtains is a great way to do this. Perhaps you’ve had a pair of sheer curtains in your kitchen for years and you’d like to try some roller blinds instead. Maybe you’ve always opted for blinds in your living room but you’d like to switch to a luxurious pair of curtains.

With winter just around the corner, we’re naturally going to be spending more time in our homes, so there’s no better time than now to transform your home into a space that looks and feels cosy.

You have new windows

If you’ve just installed new windows, it’s possible they have new dimensions. The window depth may have changed or they could now have a slightly narrower width; either way, you’re going to need a new pair of curtains to fit them.

Even if your new windows have the same dimensions as your old ones, avoid putting your old outdated curtains up and instead dress your windows up with a brand new pair. What’s the point in investing in brand new, high-quality windows only to cover them up with old curtains or outdated blinds? Instead, give your home a quick boost with a bright new pair of curtains.
